MalkaSestra (Little Sister) is the newly formed Blue Mountains chapter of Sydney’s renowned and long established Bulgarian-style female choir, Martenitsa.
MalkaSestra, is run by Martenitsa’s founder/directors, Australia’s leading expert in Bulgarian choral repertoire and vocal technique, Mara Kiek, and with her husband, Llew Kiek. Both are award-winning performers, composers and directors of world music, best known for their work with the eponymous Mara! ensemble who, this year, celebrate their 30th Anniversary of performing their unique and original style of world/jazz music around Australian and the world, having toured in over 20 countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.
They formed the Blue Mountains “Little Sister” choir in March 2014, and MalkaSestra performed their first concert in May. They are about to commence their second 10-week season of voice training and rehearsal, to continue discovering, learning and refining the skills necessary to produce the remarkable sound and exquisite harmonies of Bulgarian traditional choral music.
MalkaSestra is not a regular community choir. This ensemble is designed for serious singers who are looking for a vocal and musical challenge. The singing technique is very particular - exhilarating to achieve, but not suited to all voices - and the repertoire is challenging in its rhythms, modes and harmonic structures.
Membership is by audition.
We are currently recruiting new singers for the next season:
Thursday 17 July to Thursday 18 September.
Training/rehearsal sessions: Thursday evenings 7-9pm
Springwood Presbyterian church (small) hall
160 Macquarie Rd Springwood.
